Checklist – Winter Camping

Basic Day Gear:

  • Day Pack
  • Day Pack Cover (or trash bag)
  • Water Bottle
  • Water Bottle Carrier
  • Trail Mix/Snacks
  • Flashlight
  • Extra Batteries
  • Extra Bulb
  • Chapstick
  • Tissue Pack
  • Sunglasses or Ski Goggles
  • Scout Handbook
  • Pocket Knife (only if you have Tote-N-Chip)

Toiletry Gear:

  • Soap Bar
  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Deodorant
  • Hair Brush/Comb
  • Towels (small bath, facecloth)

Foot Gear:

  • (During cold weather no sneakers)
  • Snow Boots – high and loose, preferably with insulated liners (they should be loose enough to wear several layers of thick socks without preventing circulation)
  • Hiking Boots (if you have no winter boots)
  • Gators (if you have no winter boots)
  • Thorlo or Ragg socks
  • Liner socks (wool, polyprop, silk)
  • Extra wool socks and sock liners

Cold Weather Clothing:

  • (during cold weather no cotton outer layers)
  • Underwear
  • Thermal Underwear
  • Extra thermal underwear to use at night
  • T-Shirts
  • Long-Sleeved Shirt (pref. wool)
  • Sweater (pref. wool)
  • Long Pants (pref. wool)
  • Belt
  • Rain/Snow Jacket
  • Rain/Snow Pants
  • Heavy Jacket
  • Gloves
  • Mittens (preferable to gloves)
  • Liner Gloves
  • Overmittens
  • Tuque *
  • Balaclava *
  • Ear Muffs *
  • Scarf *
  • Dicky *

*you must have a combination that covers your nose and ears

General Camping Gear:

  • Winter Sleeping Bag (0º or -20º) (for cold weather camping you should have a sleeping bag rated to 0º or lower – and if 0º, you may want a liner for extra warmth)
  • Foam sleeping pad (this is a must for cold weather camping to insulate you from the frozen ground – no air mattresses)
  • Mess Kit
  • Cup
  • Utensils
  • Rope
